The Cairn or Cairn Community (technically Knowle West Baptist Church) engages in ministry from an amazing renovated vicarage (also called The Cairn) in Inns Court, which was purchased by Phil and Alice Lawrence in 2013. Phil was ordained and commissioned as Baptist Minister for Knowle West in a celebration held in The Cairn garden in July 2014.
We enjoy and are very grateful for ongoing support from Baptist Home Mission, the West of England Baptist Network, and Baptists Together; as well as a good, ongoing relationship with Bristol Baptist College. We are pleased to welcome student visits from time to time, most recently by Zoom. And we fully endorse the Baptists Together Declaration of Principle.
Our patterns of life continue to evolve in response to God’s leading, to our context, and to latest Government guidance. For more details, please visit our Life at the Cairn page.
We take a broad, collaborative and city-wide approach to church, with the particular aim of pursuing God's vision for human flourishing in Inns Court, through faithful presence at The Cairn. We look towards sustainable, incremental change, seeking the transformation of both people and place.
We are deeply mindful that Inns Court, Knowle West and South Bristol more widely is a fast changing context with around 5,000 new homes already built, or soon to be so. Much is changing before our eyes. South Bristol is an exciting place to live. We have a great football team (Bristol City) with a commendable vision for sport excellence, youth development and community engagement; and fabulous countryside. We even have a new Aldi!
Developing strong networks and partnerships at a local level, and further afield, is a central part of our approach.
The Cairn has been a registered charity (No 1173158) since 24 May 2017.
Encouraging and supportive articles have included:
Day 17 of 40 Days of Home Mission, 2015
Webnet News, Summer 17
Webnet AGM, July 2018 (when Phil became a fully accredited minister).
Baptists Together, Autumn 2017
Baptists Together, Sept 2019
Baptists Together Annual Review 2019
